Orthodox wedding ceremony in Santorini

blog-image

Greece is mainly an Orthodox country.

It so happened historically that for the Greeks the wedding in the church before God is considered more important than the usual registration in the city hall.

On the picturesque island of Santorini, this ceremony is held mainly in large churches:

Cathedral in Fira, Anastasi Church in Imerovigli, and Panagia Platsani in Oia. The couple must collect a package of documents and arrive on the island a few days before the date of the celebration since often the priest wants to get acquainted with the couple in advance or clarify some details.

You can request the necessary documents by sending an email to info@indigoweddings.gr.

The wedding ceremony lasts about 45 minutes and is performed in the Greek language. During the sacrament, your witnesses will cross wedding hoops. In the Greek language, they are called “Stefana,” and put on wedding rings for you. Do not worry if you do not have witnesses, we will gladly take on this responsible mission. One of our employees will be your witness.

After the ceremony, upon leaving the church, there will be many congratulations and the traditional sprinkling of rice. Then you can continue your evening with a photoshoot and delicious dinners in one of the restaurants of Santorini with stunning views of the sunset and Caldera. We will suggest restaurant options in advance and book the most suitable option depending on your preferences.

The next working day after the wedding, we will go to the municipality. To confirm the wedding and receive an official Greek marriage certificate. Which will later go for apostille and will return to you by registered mail in about 2,5-3 months.

Feel free to ask questions!

We will be happy to answer them and explain everything!
